New 936 Movement Spotlight on: Dekina Henry
To run a successful business you must have a deep
love for the products & services you provide as well as the people who use
them. This is especially important if what you do gives people what they need
as well as what they want. Enter DeKina Henry who has developed a
product line that emphasizes health and beauty on the inside as well as on the
outside. Check out her spotlight and get an inside view of the trials and
triumphs of a woman committed to making people the best version of themselves
by uncovering who they are instead of covering it up.
Q. Who
influenced or inspired you?
A. My
Grandmother, Jean was my biggest inspiration. She made everything with her
hands. Its how she expressed her love to everyone. She could sew and cook like
no other. I would take the scrap fabrics and make little purses or clothes for
my dolls. From there I got into crafting and obtained a love for creating
things.
Q. How
long have you been in business/performing?
A. I’ve
been self-employed as a Manicurist for almost twenty years. I started making my
own products about ten years into it.
Q. Where
are you from originally?
A. I was
born and raised in Conroe, Texas with a little California mixed in.
Q. What
sets your art/business apart from others?
A. What
sets me apart from others is that I food for the skin. My oils and butters are
made with skin loving ingredients that repair the skin and not just mask the
problems. I love when my clients share that they’ve been dealing with a certain
skin issue forever until they started using my products. Every ingredient
serves a purpose to repair and rejuvenate the skin without the use of harsh or
toxic chemicals.
Q. What do
you have coming up?
A. My body
care line is doing great. I am now in the developing phase for Facial
Skincare. Face masks, scrubs, serums and
toners are up next. The body care was pretty easy but the face is a whole other
entity lol. I’m gonna crush it though. I’ve been taking my time but it’ll
definitely be worth the wait.
Q. Is your
art/business online, brick & mortar or both?
A.
Currently it’s an online business but I would love to be the next Bath &
Bodyworks. Organic of course!
Q. How has
the pandemic affected you or your art/business?
A.
Fortunately the pandemic showed me not to have all of my eggs in one basket. I
learned that having an online business is imperative. And it gave me time to do
what I do best and that’s researching nature and all the amazing ingredients
that are out there in it.
Q. What
has been your biggest obstacle?
A. My
biggest obstacle is capital! You can start with what you have but when you’re
ready to go next level you need lots of capital.
Q. How do you balance your art/business with your
family life?
A. I
balance it all because I am a night owl. I do my best work when everyone is
sleeping.
Q. Any words of advice?
A. My
advice would be to not start a business just to make money. If your heart is
not in it, it will definitely affect the success of your business. I have a
passion and love for making these products. Yes money is great but when my
clients make my products a staple in their lives that’s success for me. When
they say I only use J. Marie Scrubs & Oils that’s it for me… Best feeling
in the world!
